Water Leaking Around a Window? How Window Installation May Be Involved
Seeing water around a window after a heavy rain can be concerning. It is natural to assume the window itself is the source, but that is not always the case. Water can travel from another exterior issue and appear around a window even when the original problem is elsewhere.
Failing or deteriorated caulking
One common cause of water around a window is deteriorated exterior caulking. Over time, caulk can crack, shrink, or pull away, creating openings where rainwater can get behind the window.
The condition of the caulking should be evaluated as part of a broader inspection rather than treated as the only possible cause.
Improper flashing or installation details
A window needs to be flashed and sealed properly to direct water away from the opening. If flashing was not installed correctly, water can get behind siding or exterior trim and eventually find its way inside the home.
This is why determining the path of the water is important before deciding on a repair or replacement.
Other exterior sources of water
Sometimes the source may be above or around the window. Damaged siding, loose trim, clogged gutters, or a roof leak can allow water to travel down inside the wall and show up near the window.
Older windows may also have failed seals, damaged frames, or deteriorated weather stripping that allow water to enter. More than one condition may need to be considered.
Why diagnosis comes first
Water around a window does not automatically mean the window needs to be replaced. A window specialist should first determine exactly where the water is coming from before recommending a solution.
